Biography

Stephanas heads one of the few households that Paul explicitly mentions baptizing personally during his Corinthian ministry (1 Corinthians 1:16). Paul normally delegated baptism to colleagues, so this exception signals Stephanas’s special place in the founding of the Corinthian church. More significantly, Paul identifies the household of Stephanas as “the first converts in Achaia” (1 Corinthians 16:15) — the literal first fruits of the gospel in the entire region of Greece south of Macedonia, making Stephanas’s household a landmark in the expansion of the church into Europe.

Paul’s description of Stephanas and his household goes further than noting their priority in time. He writes that “they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints” (1 Corinthians 16:15), indicating a sustained, self-giving orientation toward the community’s practical needs. This voluntary service — diaconal ministry before there was a formal diaconate — led Paul to urge the Corinthians to “be subject to such as these, and to every fellow worker and laborer” (1 Corinthians 16:16). Stephanas, along with Fortunatus and Achaicus, visited Paul during his Ephesian ministry — a visit that refreshed Paul greatly.
