Biography

Artaxerxes I appears in the post-exilic narratives as the Persian king under whom Ezra traveled to Jerusalem with authority to teach the Law and under whom Nehemiah received permission to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls.

Ezra 4 also preserves opposition correspondence from the Artaxerxes period, showing that Persian authority could be invoked against Jerusalem before being used by God for restoration.
