Biography

Ephraim was Joseph’s younger son, blessed by Jacob ahead of his older brother Manasseh. The tribe of Ephraim became one of the leading tribes in Israel and, in the prophets, “Ephraim” often functions as shorthand for the northern kingdom.

In Hosea, Ephraim is the beloved yet wayward son whom God cannot simply give up. The name carries both judgment and deep divine grief.
