Zephaniah is distinguished among the minor prophets by an unusually extended genealogy in the book’s opening verse: “the word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah.” Four generations are traced, which is rare in prophetic books. The name Hizkiah at the end of this chain is almost certainly a reference to King Hezekiah, making Zephaniah of royal blood—a great-great-grandson of the reforming king who had removed the high places and seen Jerusalem delivered from Sennacherib. Zephaniah’s heritage connects him to Judah’s greatest moment of faithfulness and helps explain both his passion for covenant purity and his access to Jerusalem’s leadership.
His ministry falls squarely within the reign of Josiah, the reforming king who rediscovered the Book of the Law around 621 BC and led the most sweeping religious reform in Judah’s history. Zephaniah’s oracles, with their fierce denunciation of Baal worship, the worship of heavenly bodies, and the syncretism of the merchant class, suggest that he prophesied in the earlier years of Josiah’s reign before the reform took hold—his preaching may have helped prepare the soil for Josiah’s later action. His contemporary Jeremiah also began prophesying under Josiah.
Zephaniah’s theological contribution centers on the Day of the LORD, a theme he develops with unparalleled concentration and lyrical power. His description of that day—dark, cloudy, a day of wrath, distress, and desolation—gave Christian hymnody the Dies Irae and gave the prophetic tradition one of its most complete pictures of divine judgment falling on both Israel and all nations. Yet the book does not end there: chapter three closes with one of the tenderest portraits of divine love in the Old Testament, with God singing over his gathered remnant.
