The Sermon on the Mount opens Matthew’s first major discourse. Jesus goes up the mountain, sits, and teaches his disciples with the crowds listening. The mountain setting evokes Sinai, but Jesus does not merely repeat Moses; he speaks with direct authority and reveals the righteousness of the kingdom.

The Beatitudes announce blessing on the poor in spirit, mourners, meek, hungry for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and persecuted. These blessings describe the surprising shape of kingdom life. Jesus’ followers are salt and light, called to visible faithfulness that glorifies the Father.

Jesus then addresses the law. He has not come to destroy the law or prophets, but to fulfill them. His teaching presses beyond external compliance into the heart: anger, lust, truthfulness, retaliation, enemy-love, and perfection before the Father. Kingdom righteousness is deeper than scribal performance.

Matthew 6 turns to religious practice and the divided heart. Giving, prayer, and fasting must be done before the Father, not for human applause. The Lord’s Prayer becomes the model of God-centered petition. Jesus then teaches about treasure, the eye, serving God rather than mammon, and freedom from anxiety through seeking first the kingdom.

Matthew 7 concludes with warnings and choices: judging hypocritically, persistent prayer, the golden rule, narrow gate, false prophets, false disciples, and the wise and foolish builders. The sermon ends with astonishment because Jesus teaches as one having authority.
