Moses instructed that when Israel crosses into Canaan, they are to set up large stones at Mount Ebal, coat them with plaster, and write all the words of the Law upon them. Six tribes (Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, Benjamin) would stand on Mount Gerizim to pronounce blessings, and six tribes (Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali) on Mount Ebal to pronounce curses. The people were to answer with a unified “Amen.” Moses then laid out the most detailed list of blessings and curses in Scripture. The blessings (28:1–14) included prosperity, victory, fruitfulness, and divine favor. The curses (28:15–68) were far longer and more detailed — disease, defeat, famine, exile, madness, and complete reversal of every blessing. The curses end with a chilling prediction: Israel will be scattered among all peoples, serve other gods, and even eat the fruit of their own bodies in siege (28:47–68). This passage haunted Jewish readers throughout the exile and resonates with New Testament writers describing the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70.
