Isaiah introduced the image in chapter 11: “And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.” This branch from Jesse’s stump (David’s lineage had been cut down like a tree) would judge righteously, defend the poor, strike the earth with the rod of his mouth. Under his reign the wolf and the lamb would lie down together; “the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.” He would be a signal to the nations and gather Israel’s dispersed.

Jeremiah used the title twice. In 23:5-6: “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” In 33:15 this promise is reaffirmed as an everlasting guarantee.

Zechariah uses the title for a priestly-kingly figure. In 3:8 the coming one is called “my servant the BRANCH.” In 6:12-13: “Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD… and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.” This combines royal and priestly offices in one person — unprecedented in Israel’s constitution.

The “Branch” title is theologically significant precisely because it uses arboreal imagery: a stump, not a living tree. The Davidic dynasty appeared to be dead after the Babylonian exile. The promise of a Branch from a stump (Isaiah 11) held out hope for new life from what appeared permanently destroyed. The name Netzer (branch/shoot) may be at the root of Jesus’ association with Nazareth — Matthew 2:23 quotes “He shall be called a Nazarene” as a summary of prophetic expectation. Zechariah’s combination of royal and priestly offices in the Branch is developed extensively in Hebrews’ portrait of Christ as the Melchizedekian priest-king.
