Biography

Aholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, was appointed by God alongside Bezalel as the co-craftsman responsible for building and furnishing the tabernacle. While Bezalel is given the title of chief craftsman and described more fully, Aholiab’s role is integral: God says, “I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you” (Exodus 31:6).

Aholiab’s specific skills are enumerated in Exodus 35:34–35: he was gifted to teach others as well as to work, and his abilities extended to engraving, designing, embroidering in blue and purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weaving. This makes him particularly associated with the textile and decorative arts of the tabernacle — the curtains, the priestly garments, and the embroidered screens that formed the boundaries of God’s dwelling place.

One of the theologically significant aspects of Aholiab’s appointment is tribal. Bezalel came from Judah — the royal tribe. Aholiab came from Dan — a tribe often associated with problematic episodes in Israel’s history (Judges 18; the golden calf at Dan). Yet both were Spirit-equipped for the same holy work. This pairing demonstrates that God’s enabling grace distributes gifts across all of Israel, not merely to the most honored tribes.

Together, Bezalel and Aholiab supervised all the craftsmen who contributed to the tabernacle project. Exodus 36 records that the people brought so many freewill offerings that Moses had to restrain them from bringing more, showing the enthusiastic cooperation between the Spirit-gifted craftsmen and the Spirit-moved congregation.
