Biography

Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, was the divinely appointed master craftsman tasked with constructing and furnishing the tabernacle. His appointment is announced in Exodus 31, where God tells Moses: “I have called him by name… I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft” (Exodus 31:2–5).

What makes Bezalel theologically remarkable is the explicit statement that the Spirit of God filled him for practical, artistic work. He is the first person in Scripture described as being “filled with the Spirit of God,” and the filling was for craftsmanship rather than prophecy or warfare. This establishes the principle that the Holy Spirit’s work includes the making of beautiful things for God’s glory, not only the speaking of words.

Bezalel’s grandfather Hur appears earlier in the Exodus narrative holding up Moses’ arms during the battle with Amalek (Exodus 17:12), and may be the same Hur who was placed in charge alongside Aaron when Moses ascended Sinai (Exodus 24:14). This family connection places Bezalel within a line of Judahite servants faithful to the Mosaic enterprise.

Bezalel worked alongside Aholiab of the tribe of Dan, and together they supervised all the craftsmen of Israel in building the tabernacle. Exodus 35–36 describes their actual work, which included the ark, the mercy seat, the table for the bread of presence, the lampstand, the altars, the courtyard, and all the priestly garments. Bezalel’s craftsmanship was the physical embodiment of the revelation given to Moses on the mountain.
