Description
Bethany beyond the Jordan is the site identified in the Gospel of John as the location where John the Baptist was conducting his baptismal ministry at the time he first bore witness to Jesus. The KJV renders the name as “Bethabara”: “These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing” (John 1:28, KJV). Earlier manuscripts read “Bethany,” giving rise to the fuller designation Bethany beyond the Jordan to distinguish it from the better-known village of Bethany near Jerusalem, the home of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha.
The precise location of the site remains a matter of scholarly discussion. It lay east of the Jordan River, likely in the territory governed by Herod Antipas, and was accessible to pilgrims coming from Judea who crossed the Jordan to receive baptism. The Madaba Mosaic Map, an early Byzantine cartographic work, appears to mark this site opposite Jericho, though other traditions have placed it farther north. In 2015, UNESCO inscribed the Baptism Site “Bethany Beyond the Jordan” in Jordan as a World Heritage Site, following archaeological discoveries there.
What is certain theologically is the momentous nature of what occurred at this crossing. It was here that John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God” (John 1:32–34, KJV). The Jordan crossing thus became the geographical stage for the inauguration of Jesus’s public ministry.
