Biblical Significance

Bethany was a small village located on the southeastern slope of the Mount of Olives, less than two miles from Jerusalem. It was home to three of Jesus’ closest friends: Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha. The village became a place of deep personal connection for Jesus, and the Gospels record that he regularly lodged there during his visits to Jerusalem, likely preferring it to the crowded and politically charged city.

The most dramatic event associated with Bethany is the raising of Lazarus from the dead, recorded in John 11. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been dead four days. Jesus’ exchange with Martha — “I am the resurrection and the life” — is one of the most profound declarations of his identity in the Gospels. The miracle of Lazarus’s resurrection was so significant that the Jerusalem authorities accelerated their plot to arrest Jesus, understanding that the public response threatened their authority.

Bethany is also the setting for the anointing of Jesus, where Mary poured expensive nard on his feet and wiped it with her hair — an act Jesus interpreted as preparation for his burial. Bethany is furthermore the last recorded location of Jesus before the Ascension in Luke’s Gospel, making it both the site of resurrection life poured out for a friend and the point of Christ’s own departure into glory.
