Mount Nebo
Overview
- Type: Geographic Feature / Mountain
- Testament: Old
- Modern Location: Jabal an-Nuweybiya, Jordan, overlooking the Jordan Valley and Jericho
Biblical Significance
Mount Nebo is where Moses climbed to view the Promised Land one final time before his death. From this vantage point, God showed Moses all of Canaan — from Gilgal to Dan, all of Ephraim, all of Judah, the south, and the western sea (Deuteronomy 34:1–4). Though Moses could see the land, God had previously told him he would not enter it (Deuteronomy 3:27). Moses died there at the age of 120, “his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated” (Deuteronomy 34:7). God Himself buried him in a valley, and “no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day” (Deuteronomy 34:6). Mount Nebo symbolizes both divine faithfulness (the promise kept for the people) and the cost of disobedience (Moses barred from entering).

Notes
