Rephidim

Biblical Significance

Rephidim (“rest”) was where two critical events occurred during Israel’s wilderness journey. First, the people complained of having no water, and God instructed Moses to strike a rock at Horeb, bringing forth water. Moses named it Massah (“testing”) and Meribah (“quarreling”).

Second, Amalek attacked Israel at Rephidim. Moses commanded Joshua to lead battle while he stood on a hill with the rod of God. When Moses held his hands up, Israel prevailed; when he lowered them, Amalek gained. Aaron and Hur held up Moses’ hands until victory.
