In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary who was betrothed to a man named Joseph of the house of David. Gabriel greeted her with the remarkable salutation “Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee,” which troubled her. Gabriel reassured her that she had found favour with God and announced that she would conceive in her womb and bear a son, whom she was to name Jesus. He would be great, called the Son of the Highest, and given the throne of David his father, and of his kingdom there would be no end.

Mary asked how this could be since she had not known a man. Gabriel answered that the Holy Ghost would come upon her and the power of the Highest would overshadow her; therefore the holy one to be born would be called the Son of God. As a sign, Gabriel told her that her cousin Elizabeth had also conceived a son in her old age — “for with God nothing shall be impossible.” Mary responded with complete submission: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” At this the angel departed.

The Annunciation marks the moment of the Incarnation — the eternal Son of God taking on human flesh in the womb of a young woman in an obscure Galilean town. Mary’s willing “yes” stands in theological contrast to Eve’s disobedience, and her response became a model of faithful submission to God’s sovereign purposes.
