Overview

Biography

Joseph was a righteous man (dikaios) of the line of David, living in Nazareth of Galilee. When he discovered that Mary (Mother of Jesus) was with child before their marriage was consummated, he purposed to put her away privily rather than expose her to public shame — “not willing to make her a publick example” (Matthew 1:19). An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and confirmed that the child was conceived of the Holy Ghost, directing him to take Mary as his wife and name the child Jesus. Joseph obeyed immediately: “Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him” (Matthew 1:24).

Joseph is the silent guardian of the infancy narratives. He received divine guidance through dreams at each critical juncture: the direction to take Mary as his wife (Matthew 1:20-21), the warning to flee to Egypt before Herod the Great’s slaughter (Matthew 2:13), the command to return after Herod’s death (Matthew 2:19-20), and the redirection to Galilee rather than Judea (Matthew 2:22). Four times warned; four times obeyed without question or recorded speech.

Joseph is present with Mary at the Presentation of Jesus and at the discovery of the Boy Jesus in the Temple. In Luke 2:33 he is called “his father” and in Luke 2:48 Mary says “thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.” After the temple episode, Joseph drops from the narrative entirely; he is generally understood to have died before Jesus’s public ministry.
