Every year Jesus’ parents traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover feast. When Jesus was twelve years old — the threshold of Jewish religious adulthood — the family made the journey as usual. On the return trip, Joseph and Mary assumed Jesus was in the traveling company and went a day’s journey before realizing he was not with them. They returned to Jerusalem and searched for three days before finding him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them and asking them questions.
All who heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. His mother asked, “Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.” Jesus replied with his first recorded words in Luke’s Gospel: “How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” Luke notes that they did not understand the saying. Jesus then returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them, while his mother kept all these things in her heart. Luke closes with the summary: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”
