Significance
The calling of the disciples is the foundation of the new covenant community Jesus is forming. The immediate, total response (“they straightway left their nets”) models the unconditional obedience of discipleship. John’s account (chapter 1) adds the testimony chain: John the Baptist to Andrew, Andrew to Peter, Jesus to Philip, Philip to Nathanael — each witness bringing another to Christ.
