Details

Moses was on Mount Sinai for 40 days and nights. The people grew impatient, saying Aaron had made a golden calf. Aaron had collected gold earrings, fashioned a molten calf, and declared “These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.” They sacrificed offerings and feasted.

The LORD told Moses to look down — Israel had “corrupted themselves.” Moses broke the two tablets of the Law. He burned the calf, ground it to powder, scattered it on water, and made the people drink it.

Moses asked who was with the LORD — and all the Levites stood with him. He commanded them to go through the camp. That day about three thousand men fell. Moses then interceded for the people, and the LORD sent a plague as judgment.
