Biblical Significance

Mount Sinai is the mountain where God meets Moses, delivers covenant law to Israel, and formally shapes the redeemed people into a covenant nation. In 1 Kings the same mountain, called Horeb, becomes the place where Elijah is stripped of spectacle and hears the LORD in a still small voice.

• Mount Sinai is one of the defining covenant locations in Scripture. Here Israel is formally constituted as the LORD’s people after redemption from Egypt.
• The mountain combines revelation and danger: thunder, fire, cloud, trumpet, and boundaries all underline the holiness of God and the seriousness of approaching Him.
• Sinai also exposes the tension in the human heart. Even while the covenant is being given, the people turn to the Golden Calf, showing the need for a deeper work of grace.
• Later biblical reflection, especially in Hebrews, uses Sinai to contrast the old covenant’s fearsome mediation with the better access secured through Christ.
