Details

Jacob had just deceived his father and stolen his brother’s blessing. Fleeing to Haran, he stopped at an unnamed place, used a stone as a pillow, and dreamed. A stairway (Hebrew: semikhah — “leaned”) connected earth and heaven, with angels moving both ways.

God stood above it and reaffirmed the Abrahamic covenant — land, descendants, blessing to all nations, and His personal presence: “I am with thee, and will keep thee.”

Jacob awoke in awe: “Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.” He named the place Bethel (“house of God”), set up the stone as a pillar, poured oil on it, and made a vow.
