Details

Returning to Canaan after 20 years, Jacob feared Esau’s wrath. He sent his family across the Jabbok river and stayed alone. A man (divine being / appearance of God) wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw he couldn’t overcome Jacob, he touched Jacob’s hip socket, dislocating it.

Jacob refused to let go without a blessing. The man asked his name, then declared: “Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.”

Jacob named the place Peniel (“face of God”), saying “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” From this point forward, Scripture mostly calls him Israel. Jacob walked with a limp — a permanent reminder of his encounter.
