In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream of four great beasts rising from a stormy sea — a lion with eagle’s wings, a bear with ribs in its mouth, a four-headed leopard, and a terrible fourth beast with iron teeth and ten horns; from among the horns rose a little horn with human eyes and a mouth speaking great things. Then the vision shifted to the heavenly courtroom:

“The Ancient of Days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.” The beast was destroyed; the dominion of the other beasts was taken away. Then “one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought him near before him. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.”

An angel explained that the four beasts represented four kingdoms, but “the saints of the Most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever.” The little horn would persecute the saints, but judgment would take away his dominion and the everlasting kingdom would be given to the people of the Most High.

Daniel 7 is the single most important text for NT eschatology and Christology. Jesus used the “Son of Man” title approximately 80 times in the Gospels — almost always self-referentially — and his most explicit claim to it was before the high priest at his trial (Matthew 26:64), where he said “Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” Revelation’s opening vision of Christ (1:12-16) deliberately echoes the Ancient of Days description from Daniel 7, applying those divine attributes to Jesus. The scene is the foundation for the NT doctrine of Christ’s exaltation and second coming.
