Bethlehem Ephratah was distinguished from another Bethlehem in Zebulun by the addition of Ephratah, tying the prophecy to the clan of Judah and the line of David. The verse reads, “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.” The paradox of greatness from smallness runs throughout the oracle: the town is explicitly called little, yet it is chosen to produce the one whose origins reach into eternity.
