After his resurrection appearances in Jerusalem, Jesus appeared again to seven disciples by the Sea of Tiberias: Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, the sons of Zebedee (James and John), and two others. Peter announced he was going fishing; the others joined him. They fished all night and caught nothing. As dawn broke, a figure stood on the shore and called out: “Children, have ye any meat?” They answered no. He told them to cast the net on the right side of the boat, and they would find. They obeyed and were unable to haul in the net for the multitude of fish.

John recognized Jesus first: “It is the Lord.” Peter, characteristically impulsive, pulled on his outer garment (he was naked) and threw himself into the sea to reach Jesus. The other disciples came in the boat dragging the net full of fish. When they came ashore, they saw a fire of coals, with fish laid on it and bread. Jesus invited them: “Come and dine.” None dared ask “Who art thou?” knowing it was the Lord. He took bread and gave it to them, and fish likewise. John notes this was the third time Jesus appeared to the disciples after his resurrection.

Peter afterward counted the fish: 153 large fish, yet the net was not broken. The number has generated much speculation — Augustine associated it with the sum of 1 through 17 — but the detail primarily functions to establish the eyewitness accuracy of the account.
