Significance
The Greek phrase egō eimi (“I am”) deliberately echoes the Septuagint’s rendering of the divine name in Exodus 3:14, where God reveals himself to Moses as “I AM WHO I AM” (egō eimi ho ōn). John’s audience, familiar with the Greek OT, would hear in each declaration a claim to divine identity, not merely descriptive self-introduction. The absolute use of egō eimi in John 8:58 — “Before Abraham was, I am” — makes this identification explicit and provoked a charge of blasphemy. Each metaphorical “I AM” thus functions as both revelatory image and implicit divine claim.
