At the request of the people, Moses sent one spy from each tribe to scout the land of Canaan from the wilderness of Zin through Red Sea to Rehob. For forty days, they explored from Shirim to Hazor to En-mizpah. They returned with a cluster of grapes so large it required two men to carry it on a pole. All twelve agreed the land “flowed with milk and honey,” but ten spies gave a terrifying report: “We cannot attack the people, for they are stronger than we… all the people whom we saw in our midst are men of great height… we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers” (13:31–33). Only Caleb and Joshua (Son of Nun) urged immediate conquest, trusting God’s promise. The people wept, murmured, and even chose to elect a new leader to take them back to Egypt. God judged them severely: that generation would die in the wilderness, one year for each day of spying, and only their children would enter the land. Caleb and Joshua would enter. The Lord swore that the rebellious generation would not see the rest He gave Israel.

Notes
