Equipment and Timing

What to spread with and when to apply biochar and blends on farm. Placement geometry: Incorporation Topdress Banding. Rates: Field Rates by System. Trials: On-farm Trial Design. Hub: Application Rates and Methods.

Report context: 2026-09-16.

1. Timing (NRCS + USBI)

NRCS FAQ: apply when ground is not frozen; common timing is early spring or post-harvest with cover crop so char equilibrates and erosion/nutrient loss is reduced; combining with other organic amendments or planned tillage improves efficiency (FAQ · answers CPS 336 planning questions).

USBI: right timing as part of 4R-style framing; allow equilibration in soil; charge 1–3 weeks before use when inoculating (Ag Guidelines · guides farm biochar application; ABI 2026 https://biochar.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/Biochar-Guidelines-for-Agriculture-Applications-2026.pdf).

Exomad/CIAT trial: apply 30 days pre-plant at 4 t ha⁻¹ (PDF · Exomad Green Corn and Bean Field Study).

Single vs repeated applications: CPS 336 practice lifespan 1 year, contractable up to 5 times (FAQ). USBI discusses single large vs repeated smaller applications in guidelines (PDF).

Particle size and binders

NRCS FAQ: particle size must match equipment; plugging if mismatched (FAQ). USBI notes binders/pelletizing to improve compatibility with existing spreaders (Guidelines; pelletizing literature example cited there: https://doi.org/10.3390/pr9091591).

Moist compost–biochar blends generally handle with compost spreaders—see Farm Co-composting Practice, Compost Blend Safety (dust).

3. Quality gates before the spreader rolls

From CPS 336 Table 3 / FAQ (2022 PDF; FAQ):

  • Production >350 °C, limited oxygen
  • C_org > 10% DW; H:C_org < 0.7
  • Metals within Table 3; report ash, liming equivalent, EC, nutrients
  • Prefer recent batch tests; IBI seal alone insufficient
  • No biosolids under CPS 336

4. Contracting calendar (US)

CPS 336 lifespan 1 year; up to 5 contracts over a contract life; ranking improves when stacked with cover crops, no-till, rotations (FAQ).
