On-farm Trial Design
How to structure credible on-farm biochar trials so results can inform rate, blend, and economics decisions—without inventing statistics. Pair with Field Rates by System, Crop Yield Effects, Agronomic Economics, and named precedents in Real World Soil Projects.
Report context: 2026-09-16.
1. Why design matters
Meta-analyses show large context dependence (soil pH, texture, climate, fertilizer co-application) (meta-analyzes crop productivity · DOI; compares tropical vs temperate yields · DOI; global GHG and yield patterns · DOI). A single unreplicated strip cannot overturn those patterns—but a well-logged strip trial can answer “does this char × this blend × this rate work here?”
Jeffery et al. (2016) CH₄ meta required randomised, replicated designs for inclusion (42 of 62 screened studies; 189 pairwise comparisons) (DOI)—a reminder that weak designs get filtered from science, and weak farm demos get filtered from lenders.
2. Minimum viable farm trial
| Element | Sourced rationale / example | URL |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Same fertility, irrigation, timing minus biochar | Oasis four-way: control / compost / biochar / combo https://pacificbiochar.com/wp-content/uploads/Oasis-Vineyard-Trial_-5th-harvest_-Final-Draft_12.12.2023.pdf |

| Charge state documented | Raw vs inoculated vs co-composted is a treatment, not a footnote | Biochar Inoculation for Fertilizer · Kammann contrast https://doi.org/10.1038/srep11080 |
| Multi-year | Oasis needed 5 harvests for economics narrative; Woody persistence claims cite Woolf | Oasis PDF · https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.1c02425 |
| Same inputs otherwise | Oasis held irrigation/fertilizer constant (so did not monetize water/fertilizer savings) | Oasis PDF · vineyard biochar field trial |
Earth Foundries facility demo used one pile per treatment, one cycle—treat as demonstration, not inferential stats (reports Napa CASP co-composting).
3. Treatment ideas that answer real questions
- Raw vs charged vs co-composted at equal biochar mass (Kammann logic — DOI).
- Broadcast vs banded at equal total t/ac (placement efficiency — Incorporation Topdress Banding).
- Biochar ± fertilizer factorial (Ye et al. 2020 synergy framing — PDF).
- NRCS scenario rates vs half-rate enriched BBF (Melo mean 0.9 t ha⁻¹ — DOI).
- Compost alone / biochar alone / combo (Oasis design).
4. Measurements worth logging
| Domain | Examples | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Yield / quality | Crop yield, grade, pruning weight (Oasis) | Economics |
| Soil | pH, EC, OM, P, moisture; depth of incorporation | Safety + mechanisms Compost Blend Safety |
| Amendment | Spec sheet, moisture, bulk density, % blend | Unit conversion |
| Ops | Spreader settings, fuel/time | Cost Components |
| Optional GHG | Chamber N₂O/CH₄ if claiming flux co-benefits | GHG Fluxes — do not invent |
| Credits | Application evidence pack if CDR offtake | Matrix Pathways for Credits |
5. Statistics without overclaiming
- Prefer confidence intervals / paired contrasts over single-year % without error bars.
- Report absolute yields alongside % vs control (Oasis cumulative t/ac table is a model — PDF).
- For economics, stress-test crop price and zero yield response (Galinato caution for temperate wheat — DOI; Agronomic Economics).
- Do not average unreplicated strips into a “meta.”
