Farm Co-composting Practice

How farms and compost facilities actually run biochar co-composting and compost–biochar blends: ratios, timing in the pile, equipment, NRCS payment scenarios, and named facility/field examples. Mechanisms: Co-composting Science. Safety: Compost Blend Safety. Charging without a compost facility: Biochar Inoculation for Fertilizer. Rates after the product leaves the pile: Field Rates by System, Application Rates and Methods.

1. Decision tree (practice)

  1. Have an active composting operation? → Prefer early co-composting (COMBI) over mixing finished compost with raw char alone (reviews co-composted biochar soil effects · DOI; explains biochar plus compost practice).
  2. No compost facility, but need agronomic response? → Charge/inoculate 1–3 weeks with compost, manure, tea, fertilizer, urine, or microbes (USBI Ag Guidelines · guides farm biochar application; NRCS inoculate language CPS 336 2022 PDF).
  3. Seeking EQIP/CSP CPS 336? → Match a published blend scenario quantity table and state payment schedule (NRCS FAQ · answers CPS 336 planning questions; NRCS soil carbon amendment in US ag).
  4. Stacking voluntary CDR? → Lock ownership / no-double-claim language (Matrix Pathways for Credits, Double Counting and Credit Ownership).

2. Target loadings (facility and farm piles)

Convert volume ↔ mass with measured bulk density and moisture. NRCS: dry weight of 1 yd³ biochar roughly 135–540 lb depending on material (FAQ).

3. Pile management checklist

  1. Char quality gate before mixing: production >350 °C limited O₂; C_org >10% DW; H:C_org <0.7; metals within CPS 336 Table 3; report ash, liming equivalent, EC, nutrients (CPS 336 2022; FAQ). No biosolids feedstocks under CPS 336 (PFAS).
  2. Screen/crush as needed so particle size matches turning/spreading gear (plugging risk noted in FAQ for drills/injectors).
  3. Add early, mix thoroughly with wet feedstocks (ABI draft; Pacific white paper).
  4. Moisture / C:N / aeration — stay in the composting window your facility already uses; Li et al. 2025 recommend C:N 20–30, moisture 55–65%, pH 7.5–8.5, EC <4 mS cm⁻¹ when optimizing gas mitigation (DOI).
  5. Cure to maturity before farm sale or field use — immature compost pathogen/weed risk (NRCS FAQ maturity caution; Compost Blend Safety).
  6. Document batch IDs, % biochar (state volume vs weight), feedstock, and lab sheets for both CPS 336 and any CDR offtake (Matrix Pathways for Credits).

ABI draft economic narrative (qualitative): operators report shorter processing, fewer turns (fuel/labor), and higher nutrient value product (PDF). Rexius case in that draft: 5% by volume windrow comparison with higher moisture/nitrates/nutrients vs control pile.

4. NRCS CPS 336 field blend scenarios (FY2024)

These are payment scenarios (acres unit), not universal agronomic optima. From FAQ Table 1 (PDF):

ScenarioCompostBiochar
20% biochar / 80% compost4.4 tons/ac0.8 yd³/ac
40% biochar / 60% compost3.3 tons/ac1.6 yd³/ac
60% biochar / 40% compost2.2 tons/ac2.4 yd³/ac
80% biochar / 20% compost1.1 tons/ac3.2 yd³/ac
100% biochar—4 yd³/ac
Compost off-site3 tons/ac—

Payment rates are state-specific. Farmland Info quick guide example: FY2023 typical 60/40 scenario constructed around ~$160 per cubic yard average cost components (purchase, shipping, loading, hauling, applying, incorporating)—flat scenario rate, not invoice match (PDF).

Manure as inoculant (paid vs unpaid)

NRCS allows mixing biochar with raw manure as inoculant; CPS 336 does not pay for the manure—contract the 100% biochar scenario and mix at producer expense under a nutrient management plan; only biochar counts toward minimum quantity (FAQ). Watch P index / high-P soils when using manure-rich chars or blends.

Practice lifespan: 1 year; may be contracted up to 5 times; ranking improves when stacked with other soil-health practices (FAQ).
