Principles

  1. Soil- and product-specific. NRCS: rates should be based on soil tests and carbon-amendment lab results (CPS 336 FAQ, Apr 2026 · answers CPS 336 planning questions).
  2. Charge / inoculate fresh char with compost, manure, compost tea, or nutrients before or during application when agronomic response is a goal (FAQ; CPS 336 2022 PDF · defines NRCS practice 336).
  3. Incorporate when possible; surface-only applications risk wind/water loss, especially on slopes (FAQ).
  4. Separate CDR mass goals from agronomic optimum—high research rates are not always economic (Agronomic Economics, Matrix Pathways for Credits).

Unit conversion caveats

NRCS FAQ: dry weight of 1 cubic yard of biochar ranges roughly 135–540 lb (FAQ). Always convert with measured bulk density and moisture.

Methods of placement (overview)

Detail: Incorporation Topdress Banding.

  • Broadcast + incorporation — manure/lime spreaders + tillage (FAQ).
  • Banding / seed-row — Oasis GPS rip + winged plow bowl (Oasis PDF); Nepal root-zone (DOI).
  • Deep incorporation — Dominus to 36” (case).
  • No-till / drill / prills / injection / fertigation — FAQ plugging caution; Exomad fertigation (Exomad).
  • Pasture topdress — CPS 336 pasture OK; not native rangeland except facilitating CPS 550/342 (FAQ).
  • Composting co-batch — Farm Co-composting Practice.

Quality gates before rate setting

From CPS 336 Table 3 / FAQ (2022 PDF; FAQ):

  • Production >350 °C, limited oxygen (pyrolysis/gasification)
  • C_org > 10% DW; H:C_org < 0.7
  • Metals within Table 3 maxima; report ash, liming equivalent, EC, nutrients
  • Prefer recent batch tests; IBI seal alone is not sufficient without spec sheet
  • No biosolids feedstocks under CPS 336 (PFAS)

Contracting lifespan (US)

CPS 336 practice lifespan 1 year; may be contracted up to 5 times over a contract life. Ranking improves when stacked with other soil-health practices (FAQ).
