Standing on the Plains of Moab opposite Jericho, Moses addressed the entire assembly of Israel — a generation that had never known slavery in Egypt. His first speech (ch. 1–4) reviewed their journey from Mount Sinai, the rebellion of the spies at Kadesh-barnea, the thirty-eight years of wandering, and the conquest of Sihon and Og. His second speech (ch. 5–11) restated the Ten Commandments and called for wholehearted love of God, including the Shema (6:4–5). His third speech (ch. 12–26) gave detailed laws for life in the Promised Land — worship, justice, warfare, social responsibility, and feast observance. Throughout, Moses appealed from their personal experience: “Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt, to Pharaoh, to all his servants, and to all his land” (11:2). The speeches were delivered in the thirtieth year after the exodus, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month.
